One in ten new mothers get sick of depression within the first year after the birth of her child. This is demonstrated by the data collected by the University of Pisa on a sample of over one thousand women.

The first year of motherhood seems to be the most ‘exposed to the worsening of the disease, but depression, unfortunately occurs even before birth, during pregnancy, particularly in those women who have already suffered from anxiety, or are veterans of previous depression.

The main difficulty is to accept the discomfort: the family should be alert for red flags such as insomnia, anxiety, crying spells or apathy.

The clinics and gynecologists should periodically refer pregnant women and new mothers to tests to identify women at risk.

Line to listen and to try to alleviate the sense of isolation, the loneliness of those living, consequently, a situation of great discomfort, caused by living with a family member with mental health problems.

It can also provide information and guidance on specialist health and care facilities around the country.
