It has long been aware of the many benefits that the Mediterranean diet offers health. However, new research in Spain found that this healthy habit also helps maintain a good mood. The Mediterranean diet is based, broadly speaking, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fish. It is also characterized
to use lots of olive oil and use very little beef and alcohol. Several studies concluded that contributes too many areas of health, but especially the cardiovascular system.
The new research, conducted at the University of Navarra, indicates that people who follow this diet have a 30% lower risk of suffering from depression. However, scientists who conducted the study clarify that well known yet the specific mechanisms by which a better adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern prevents depression.
An investigation of years
Between 1999 and 2005, researchers began working with 10,094 Spanish men and women in good health. Were asked a series of questions through which they learned their degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet.
Point in time analysis was 4.4 years from the time the volunteers completed the questionnaire. The scientists noted that in this period, 480 new cases had emerged from depression, which affected 156 men and 324 women. By comparing these data with the dietary guidelines of each, they deduced that those who followed the Mediterranean diet were 30% less likely to develop depression.
The authors believe that it is most likely that this benefit does not come from individual components of the diet, but the overall dietary pattern.
