Now that the cold season approaches, this recommendation may be interested: try to always serve a minimum of 7 hours of rest, because otherwise you’d be increasing at three times the possibilities catch cold.
Even worse, if you sleep less time, the risk is multiplied by five, according to the findings of research conducted in Pittsburgh, United States, by a group of experts from Carnegie Mellon University.
As explained lead author, Sheldon Cohen, “to develop regular sleeping habits and routine contributes to the functioning of the immune system’s ability to defend it.”
Cohen also recalled that previous evidence indicating that sleep eight hours a night recommended contribute to lower rates of heart disease and death.
For this work, which lasted for four years, from 2000 to 2004, data were collected from 153 men and women who answered questionnaires about the number of hours of rest. Also asked about their feelings the next day, for instance, if they felt tired or not.
At the same time, and besides having to answer the questions, participants were given nose drops to be placed and report any symptoms of colds, flu or nasal discomfort. Finally, as more conclusive evidence, they took samples of mucous and blood tests to test the presence of virus and the body’s responses to them.
“We found that those who had been sleeping less than seven hours were three times more likely to get sick of catching a cold,” said the author of the work.
“On the other hand, those who lose more than 8 percent of their time off every night, because they are slow to awaken or fall asleep,” have their chances of getting sick when exposed to a virus increased five times, “added Cohen .
Finally, the professional recalled, in general, about the importance of “taking care of the body not only eating well and being active but also relaxing the amount of time required by activities that everyone does.”
These findings were published in the latest issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.
